Maybe you see the signs in the neighbor’s lawn announcing their 5th grader’s ‘graduation’ from elementary school, or you hear about the nephew who is on middle school honor roll. At times, it seems like kids who are homeschooled or in online school ‘miss’ out on the parties and celebrations. It doesn’t have to be that way! Have a homeschool celebration AND evaluate your year.
How can you make sure to end the year in a special way with a homeschool celebration?
Especially for younger kids, an official certificate means a lot (even if it’s signed by you!). Pick one of their favorite activities to do for the afternoon (if feasible with the pandemic!) and present them with this special certificate– make sure to take photos!

What questions can you ask at an “End of the Year Conference”?
The homeschool or online school year doesn’t generally end with a report card in a tightly sealed envelope. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t do an evaluation– in this case, let your child be the evaluator! This will allow them to take more ownership and pride in their own educational journey (and you may be surprised with their answers). Print this document (or make your own list) and celebrate the end of the school year with ice cream and a discussion over what went right and what can be improved. Make sure to laugh!
This is a huge opportunity to really listen to your child- these moments are few and far between.
