Keep your kids learning all summer with quality summer online classes from experts. If you need some other quick and easy suggestions for learning activities, check out these 25 SIMPLE things.
Elementary Age- Summer Online Classes and Learning Opportunities
Summer Online Classes Via Outschool
We love Outschool for e-learning- we have gone on and on how much we love it and have some good examples of our faves here. Outschool offers one-time e-learning classes (art, math, reading, science, music and more), short term summer online classes, and even weekly summer camps- it’s a great way to have some accountability over the summer without having to drive all over. Careful- they are addicting and your kids will love them! If you want to view the class platform and how easy it is to maneuver the website, you can check out this video! Note: these classes ARE over Zoom- but I promise, they are small class sizes and the teachers are experts at using technology in an engaging way.
Summer Camps / Summer Online Classes via Open Tent Academy
We use Open Tent Academy for many LIVE online classes during the school year, and they are offering some super unique summer online classes. You can sign up for a weekly (or one-time) book club, various science or history courses, and even an American Girl doll camp teaching about historic times. This is another educational provider with true expertise in teaching online classes in a way to keep kids interested- e-learning done right!
30 Days of Educational Activities from FundaFunda Academy
Looking for some ideas of how to keep your kid learning in multiple subjects throughout the summer? In this package (cost is just $10), you will receive well-organized lessons (150!!!)- basically a lesson in 5 subjects per day for 30 days. You can spread these out through the summer. Content is varied but unique and interesting- your child can work at their own pace through eLearning modules.
Read-Alouds
Check out Monday-Friday daily read alouds at 1pm Central from Dan Gutman on Facebook Live or via his website (https://www.dangutman.com)- the author of the My Weird School popular series reads a few chapters aloud daily at 1pm Central time (your kiddo will hear one full book each week; listen live or to the recording). Kids LOVE these books! Note that various other read alouds may still be available or ongoing post- quarantine.
Audible
Audible is awesome- massive quantity of audio books ready to be read to your kiddo (not in a robotic voice)- it’s a game-changer! Just stick a blanket under a tree, bring some paper for doodling, and let your kiddos listen to a few books right from your phone via Audible.
Read FREE for 30 days!“>app is a must-have for any elementary kid. I repeat: this app is a must-have! It is seriously more than a library within an app- it’s a library of books (both fiction and non-fiction) and kids have the option of having books read to them or reading themselves. The books are modern, well categorized, and you can save favorites to your personal collection. Oh, as if this was not enough- it also includes educational videos about stuff your kids will enjoy- no groans over boring content. We love using Math (Just One SIMPLE Workbook)
We used to use the big ol’ workbooks, but found them tedious and often half-done. We love the Math Minute workbooks. We have used them summer after summer (my oldest is now 16 and he used them back in elementary). If your goal is to just help your child maintain what they have learned, each page (math minute) contains a variety of problems from that grade of math.
For example, third grade pages include a few multiplication problems, a bit of geometry, a problem or two on fractions, and maybe a time-telling or story problem. They typically take just a few minutes to complete and it’s a great way to make the kids stay up on math without overwhelming them with a huge workbook. They are a bit pricey but worth it. We have also had success with the Grammar Minutes from the same series.
Math Games
Math games are an easy, no-stress way to help your kids maintain their learning over summer. Our favorites (all reasonably priced) include:
- Sum Swamp
- Just about any logic game via Think Fun (our fave is Rush Hour)
- Pizza Fraction Fun
- Quick Pix (these are a family fave for us for math facts- even my older kids don’t mind playing this card game)
- Zeus on the Loose (another really fun card game)
Bonus…. 8 Weeks of Summer “Camp”
