What A Day of Online School Looks Like For a Middle Schooler: What to Expect With an E-Learning Schedule

Considering online school or e-learning for your middle schooler? Understanding what a typical online middle school schedule looks like may help you determine if it is the right choice for your family.

My daughter is currently mid-way through first semester of 8th grade. Although each day is different for her, this is a sample of an ‘average’ day. NOTE: She is not sitting bored behind the computer all day!

Sample- 8th Grade Online Middle School Schedule

7:00-8:00 am: Wake up, have breakfast, review calendar and plans for day, make sure everything is printed out and ready

8:00-9:00 am: History homework (this is usually reading with assigned questions, worksheets, map work, essay work- all assigned by her teacher from her online class)

9:00-10:00 am: Algebra homework (we use www.mrdmath.com; she has a daily video to watch, paper work and either a quiz or a spiral review)

10:00-11:30 am: Physical Science live online (we use www.myfunscience.com; she has a 90 minute live online session once per week and then daily assignments…the line online component has quite a bit of peer interaction and often a lab activity during the 90 minutes)

11:30-12:00 pm: Lunch

12:00-1:30 pm: Mixed Media live online (we use www.opententacademy.com; this is a 10 week course during which she is learning Photoshop and other media tools)

1:30-3:00 pm: Science lab onsite at Co-Op (these are four week blocks so it really depends on the week)

3:30-7:45 pm: Gymnastics practice (this time varies depending on the day)

8:30-9:30 pm: Language Arts Homework and other catch up

10:00 pm: Bedtime!

We try to schedule so she has at least one live online course daily– it breaks up the day and she enjoys the interaction. Because we are open-enrolled and participate in a Homeschool Assistance Program, she has the opportunity to participate in job shadowing, electives, field trips, and social activities. She also attends youth group at church in addition to her athletic activities.

Online school does provide additional variety beyond what she would do at regular public school- she enjoys a variety of one-time classes through www.outschool.com when possible. All in all, she has a very full online middle school schedule but enjoys the work she has!
